Family : Burseraceae General Description: Commonly known as 'Indian Olibanum'. It is a large, branching, deciduous tree, which grows abundantly in the dry, hilly parts of India. Boswellia is a balsamic tree that secretes aromatic oleoresins, which are collected, when they dry into a gum, after exuding from the cuts of the bark. Active Principle: Boswellia serrata is a standardized powder extract of the gum containing a mixture of Boswellic acids. It contains 75% - 80% composed of Boswellic acids and Olibanoresin. Indications: Rheumatoid arthritis Osteoarthritis Ankylosing Spondylitis Gout Low back Pain Soft tissue rheumatism Myositis Fibrositis Advantages: Remarkable reduction of joint swelling, restoration and improvement of blood supply to inflamed joints, pain relief, increased mobility, amelioration of morning stiffness, steroid sparing effect and general improvement in the quality of life. It produces none of the common side effects associated with conventional NSAIDs and second line drugs. There are no reports of GI ulceration, gastro-intestinal bleeding and perforation and no kidney disease.
